As a developing country, India is facing the problem of poverty and unemployment like any other under developed country. With the initiation of NABARD through its Self Help Group Bank Linkage Programme in 1992, Self Help Groups (SHGs) were linked with banks. Formation of SHGs in rural areas to generate micro credits has become
viable units to support various activities related to agriculture, dairy, cattle grazing, rural enterprises and the like. SHGs enhance the equality of status of women as participants by empowering them and also now society is considering women as opinion leaders. The overall objective of the present micro level study is to analyze the economic
empowerment of women through SHGs in some selected districts of the then Andhra Pradesh (before bifurcation of the State into Telengana and Andhra Pradesh) and to study and demonstrate that SHGs are the best formal micro level finance institutions to generate additional employment and income for needy people by involving them in
planning and decision making. The study reveals that many members as individual and also as group are involved in entrepreneurial activities. It was also observed that there is lot of scope for SHGs to take up venture.

Tripathy, Julie
Recognizing the potential benefits of interventions to empower women through policy announcements and process changes Governments both at the Union and at State level have come forward to help women entrepreneurship development. In this paper, efforts to promoting gender equity through empowerment of women as a major development goal is assessed with its link to quality at entry, operation and scalability through analysis of secondary as well as primary data obtained from a major sample survey conducted in two districts of Odisha. The study finds that young women entrepreneurs are operating on very low scale both in rural and urban areas of one underdeveloped and an advanced district. Investment, employment and income interrelationships are analysed. It is found that with their varieties of products and services, the women entrepreneurs consolidate their position with increased employment and income, and improved new-found social status but are unable to upscale their operations to graduate to higher levels. The principal factors limiting their efforts to upscale are identified. In the context of globalization, increased competition and social dynamics, it is recommended that policy-relevant translation of available insights from this and other related studies needs to be effected through strategic operational changes at institutional level.

100 successful women entrepreneurs involved in the informal sector were surveyed through interviews in 5 areas of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, which is a State in India. The survey showed that poor women entered business at a very early age and were either illiterate or just literate. Their enterprises were service or job work oriented in nature. They were confronted with a lot of mental and physical stresses, domestic problems and suffered from high levels of both fear of success and failure. Their enterprises faced problems of management, finance and working capital and they themselves encountered professional disrespect On the other hand, the enterprises of educated women in the sector were growing rapidly from strength to strength. Most of them were extremely self-confident and were capable of becoming leading entrepreneurs of the country. Prescription of success for these women entrepreneurs
were suggested by way of policies and strategies that would help in the sustainable development of the units, in the light of the problems confronted by them. Besides, it was also stated that policies and strategies should also be evolved for sustainable development of the beneficiaries, taking their familial, social, economic, educational and political lives.
