India's rich tapestry of handicrafts is a testament to centuries-old traditions, embodying cultural heritage and economic potential. Yet, behind the intricate designs and skilled craftsmanship lies a reality of challenges for artisan clusters. At the EDII, we recognize these clusters' pivotal role in preserving our cultural legacy and fostering economic growth. Our recent scoping study within Hoshiarpur's Wood Carving Cluster, supported by Punjab SRLM, furthers our commitment to empowering artisan communities. Beyond mere economic considerations, this study focused on engaging women's help Groups (SHGs), acknowledging their vital but often marginalized role in the sector. By empowering these women, we aim to create a sustainable future that benefits both artisans and the traditional crafts they uphold.

With its noteworthy achievements across 15 SVEP partner states, EDII has taken significant strides at capitalizing on this ecosystem, EDII is now outlining a more expansive plan for improving outreach and inclusivity. Utilizing the invaluable knowledge and expertise acquired from implementing SVEP, EDII is well-equipped to implement best practices at the cluster level, particularly among community institutions. Towards this end, EDII aims to upskill CRP-EPs as master trainers, enhance branding and marketing of SVEP products and services, identify and create six immersion blocks, develop a coffee table book, establish and maintain the SVEP microsite and conduct research studies.

SVEP has established itself as the ecosystem provider for nano enterprises in the rural areas. EDII has been at the front from the inception of the Programme and has provided its technical services to SRLMs in actualizing programme objectives. A consultative meeting was organized by the NRLM from 25th to 27th of the month to discuss changes in the guidelines of OSF, Cluster and SVEP. It was agreed that the guidelines need to change as learning accumulates and the programme matures. It should also factor in the geographical peculiarities of the North Eastern states. The discussions hovered around the proposed Micro Enterprise Development (MED) programme and its layering over the existing SVEP and OSF programme areas. Secondly, viability and the usefulness of the PTS platform as the program monitor were discussed. The moot question was whether the PTS was needed at all or whether a smaller section of the enterprises could be used to gauge the programme effectiveness and take strategic decisions. Incubation for scalable enterprises also came up for discussion. On the whole, it was felt that the policies and the guidelines should be in tune to address the new realities for greater scale of outcomes. As far as the cumulative progress at the end of the month is concerned, till date, we have paved the path for 71,789 enterprises to take shape of success. This e-newsletter brings to you a glimpse of programme implementation and its general direction across the programme area.

The COVID-19 pandemic has almost put a grinding halt to the world’s economy. It has taken such a toll on the economy that the market is struggling to come to terms with the economic damage that the world has witnessed in decades. During this uncertain time, rural enterprises across India have also been impacted. But some of the entrepreneurs supported by EDII under SVEP have shown resilience and demonstrated that even in such tough and testing times, they can rise to the challenge and convert an adversary into an opportunity.
One such example is micro-entrepreneurs trained in stitching. They are the ones who are contributing immensely in the efforts to prevent COVID-19 spread by making face masks and supplying them to the local authorities, wholesalers and retailers. In this time of crisis, 39 CRP-EPs from 14 SVEP blocks worked in COVID-19 relief operations undertaken by the local administration. They supported the entrepreneurs in supply and distribution of masks, provided services in the free kitchen and food distribution to migrants and daily wagers. They also worked for the local authorities and contributed in spreading awareness and advisories related to COVID.
This edition focuses on activities carried out in the pre- and post-lockdown period and gives a glimpse of two outshining enterprises promoted under SVEP .
