Mumbai, 10 July: NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) has helped 28 more traditional products from across India obtain Geographical Indication (GI) tags, taking the total number of GI registrations supported by NABARD to 176. The new tags cover handicrafts, handloom textiles, bamboo craft, metalwork, painting and musical instruments, including Bihar's Nalanda Bawan Buti saree and Gaya Pattharkatti stone craft, Assam's bamboo craft and Bihu Pepa, Himachal wood carving and Madhya Pradesh's Khajuraho metal craft. NABARD chairman Dr Shaji Krishnan V. called GI tags a powerful tool to protect traditions and strengthen small rural traders. Over 13,000 artisans and producers have been linked to larger markets, generating direct employment for about 50,000 people; GI facilitation centres have been set up with EDII Ahmedabad, Bihar Agricultural University and in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, and a special GI store opened at Aihole, Karnataka.en_US
